Meet the First Nigerian Footballers to Play in the Spanish La Liga
Nigeria has a long and proud history of producing football talent that has graced some of the world’s biggest leagues, including the Premier League, Serie A, and La Liga.
However, before Nigerian stars became regular names in La Liga, a few pioneers laid the groundwork. The first Nigerian to play in Spain’s top flight was Nduka Ugbade, followed by Wilfred Agbonavbare and later Mutiu Adepoju.
1. Nduka Ugbade – CD Castellón (1989–1990)
Nduka Ugbade made history as the first Nigerian footballer to appear in La Liga when he signed for CD Castellón in the 1989/90 season. His stint may have been brief, but it opened the door for other Nigerian stars to dream big and pursue careers in Spain.
2. Wilfred Agbonavbare – Rayo Vallecano (1990–1996)
Popularly known as “Willy,” Agbonavbare joined Rayo Vallecano in 1990 and became a cult hero in Vallecas. He played a key role in the club’s promotions to La Liga in 1992 and 1995, amassing 177 appearances across all competitions—including 76 in La Liga. He earned the nickname “Cat of Vallecas” thanks to his outstanding reflex saves and composure in goal.
3. Mutiu Adepoju – Racing Santander & Real Sociedad (1992–1999)
Although many believe Mutiu Adepoju was the first Nigerian in La Liga, he was actually the third. Nicknamed “The Headmaster” for his aerial prowess, Adepoju had a stellar career in Spain, starting with Racing Santander and later playing for Real Sociedad. He spent seven seasons in La Liga and is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most successful exports to Spain.
Today, Adepoju continues to promote La Liga’s presence in Nigeria as a respected ambassador, carrying forward a legacy started by Ugbade and Agbonavbare.
