The Super Falcons of Nigeria have extended heartfelt support to South African winger Gabriela Salgado after her successful surgery following an unfortunate injury during the WAFCON 2024 semi-final.
Salgado, a key member of the Banyana Banyana squad, was stretchered off during the closing minutes of South Africa’s narrow 2-1 loss to Nigeria on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. The injury, which occurred late in the second half, was confirmed to be a mid-shaft fracture in her left leg. She underwent successful surgery at the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca and is currently recuperating.
According to South Africa’s team doctor, Dr. Lindi Mokoena, “Gabi sustained a mid-shaft fracture during the match against Nigeria and has already had a successful procedure. While she will be sidelined for the remainder of 2025, we’re immensely grateful for the prompt care she received from CAF officials, the hospital medical team, and our Banyana Banyana staff.”
The Super Falcons responded with a touching message of solidarity, issued through their media officer Mary Akinsola, emphasizing unity and compassion over rivalry.
“The entire Super Falcons family — players, coaches, and staff — are deeply saddened by Gabriela Salgado’s injury. Our thoughts are with her during this difficult time, and we’re wishing her a smooth and full recovery,” the statement read.
“Moments like these transcend competition. They remind us of the human spirit that unites athletes across teams. We stand firmly with Gabriela, her loved ones, and the entire Banyana Banyana squad. Our wish is for her to regain strength and return to the pitch stronger than ever.”
Gabriela is expected to remain in Morocco until she’s discharged and will rejoin her team for the trip back home next week. The football community continues to rally around her with messages of support, showing that unity and sportsmanship remain at the heart of the game.
