🚨 UEFA Fines Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Other European Clubs for Financial Fair Play Violations
UEFA has fined Chelsea and four other European clubs for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations during the 2023 and 2024 financial years.
Premier League side Chelsea were handed a £27 million fine by UEFA after being found in violation of the European governing body’s financial sustainability rules. While the club was not in breach of the Premier League’s own Profit and Sustainability Rules, UEFA deemed their conduct inconsistent with the stricter continental guidelines.
The violations were linked to questionable transactions, including player swaps, asset sales (both tangible and intangible), and transfers between related parties, which UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) flagged during their compliance checks.
⚠️ Aston Villa Also Sanctioned
Aston Villa were fined £9.5 million, broken down into £4.3 million for exceeding acceptable financial losses and £5.2 million for breaching UEFA’s squad cost regulations.
The club reportedly avoided harsher penalties by transferring ownership of their women’s team to a related entity — a move previously employed by Chelsea. However, this workaround is now under scrutiny, and Premier League clubs have recently voted to ban such practices going forward.
