Super Eagles of Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has officially been handed a two-month suspension following an investigation into illegal betting activities, as confirmed by Italian football authorities.
According to a report by Football Italia, the Nigerian international — who currently plays for Serie A side Udinese — narrowly avoided a severe four-year ban for sporting fraud after disciplinary proceedings concluded in July 2025.

The case stems from a Serie A match between Udinese and Lazio on March 11, 2024, during which Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting in the 64th minute while Udinese led 2-1. Following the game, betting regulators noted suspicious activity centered around wagers predicting that Okoye would be booked.
The bets, placed at 8/1 odds primarily in the Udine region, reportedly yielded over €120,000 in winnings. Authorities linked the unusual betting pattern to Okoye and three associates, triggering a full investigation into possible match manipulation and fraud.

In June 2025, the matter was presented before a disciplinary commission. Prosecutors initially considered charging Okoye with sporting fraud — a serious offense that could have resulted in a four-year suspension. However, the final ruling downgraded the charges to illegal betting, sparing him from a harsher penalty due to lack of direct evidence linking him to deliberate match-fixing.
