The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional organization made up of 15 West African nations. Since its founding in 1975, ECOWAS has worked to advance economic integration, development, and regional cooperation.
One of its specialized institutions, GIABA (Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa), is currently recruiting for a key position.

🌍 Job Overview
As a Legal Officer, you will support the legal and compliance efforts of GIABA in fighting money laundering and terrorist financing. You will work closely with the Senior Legal Officer to conduct evaluations, support training programs, and provide legal expertise to improve compliance across West Africa.
🔍 Key Responsibilities
- Participate in GIABA’s mutual evaluation exercises and draft legal sections of Mutual Evaluation Reports (MERs).
- Support organization of legal training programs and workshops.
- Analyze AML/CFT follow-up reports submitted by member states.
- Assist in drafting or updating laws and frameworks related to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT).
- Contribute to strategic documents, including GIABA’s Annual Reports and Work Plans.
- Represent GIABA in regional and international mutual evaluations as a legal expert.
- Support the legal capacity building of ECOWAS member states.
- Contribute to updates and reviews of international AML/CFT standards (FATF Guidance, Best Practices, etc.).
🎓 Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized university.
- At least 3 years’ experience in legal practice, preferably with exposure to AML/CFT legislation or criminal justice systems.
- Solid knowledge of:
- Proceeds of crime legislation
- Mutual legal assistance
- Extradition laws
- UN conventions and international AML/CFT standards
- Familiarity with FATF mutual evaluation processes is a strong advantage.
- Age: 24–50 years old (internal candidates are exempt).
- Language: Must speak one of ECOWAS’s official languages (Portuguese, English, or French). Knowledge of a second language is a plus.
💰 Salary
- P2: UA 37,674.89 (approx. $59,443.44/year)
- P3: UA 43,414.62 (approx. $68,499.59/year)
