Early Life & Education
Born on July 5, 1992, in Surulere, Lagos State, Abbey Elias, professionally known as Skiibii Mayana, grew up in Lagos where he completed his primary and secondary education. The nickname “Skiibii,” meaning “Smart and Sharp Person,” was given to him by an uncle and later became his stage name.
He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Ekiti State University (formerly University of Ado Ekiti).
Career
Skiibii started off as a rapper in high school, later transitioning into R&B and Afropop. Despite facing resistance from his father regarding a music career, Skiibii persisted in his dream. On December 24, 2014, he signed with Five Star Music and received a brand new Hyundai SUV as part of the deal.
He released his debut single “Stay With Me” featuring Kcee in January 2015 and appeared in Chimbalin’s hit “Kilimanjaro.” Skiibii later left Five Star Music to establish his own label, More Grace Music World.
His breakout hit “Sensima” featuring Reekado Banks skyrocketed him to fame, followed by other major tracks like “Ah Skiibii,” “Daz How Star Do” (featuring Falz and Teni), and “London.”
Controversy
In August 2015, Skiibii was embroiled in controversy after allegedly faking his own death, a stunt that sparked public outrage but arguably boosted his notoriety and visibility in the Nigerian music scene.
