Early Life
Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy, was born on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He began his musical journey producing beats with FL Studio and later pursued media studies in the United Kingdom. Upon returning to Nigeria, he interned at a radio station—an experience that paved the way for his entry into the music industry.
Career Highlights
Burna Boy rose to fame in 2012 with the release of “Like to Party”, a hit single from his debut album L.I.F.E. He followed it with On a Spaceship (2015) and Outside (2018), which featured the global anthem “Ye.”
In 2019, he released African Giant, earning a Grammy nomination and accolades at the BET and All Africa Music Awards. His momentum continued with Twice as Tall in 2020, which won the Grammy for Best Global Music Album.
By 2022, his album Love, Damini broke streaming records and became the highest-charting Nigerian album on the Billboard 200. The following year, Burna Boy became the first African artist to perform at the UEFA Champions League Final Kick-Off Show and sold out New York’s Citi Field—another historic milestone for African music.
In 2023, he won the inaugural Best Afrobeats Artist at the Billboard Music Awards and was named the most streamed Sub-Saharan African artist on Spotify for the second year in a row. He has received 10 Grammy nominations, the most ever for a Nigerian artist.
In 2024, Burna Boy performed “Sittin’ on Top of the World” at the Grammy Awards with Brandy and 21 Savage. Later that year, his track “Higher” earned a Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance.
